PROGRAMS
Throughout the years spent in the Montessori environment each child
grows toward becoming both a compassionate citizen and an independent
learner.
Toddler Class: In the first
years, children progress from the new-found joy of learning the
sounds of the alphabet to the thrill of unlocking the "secret"
of blending sounds to read words. They move from manipulating, with
tiny fingers, knobbed cylinders, rods and spindles, grading for
size, color or number.... to using colorful beads to solve addition
problems developed the year before. Each year many of the same materials
are used in increasing depth and new ones are introduced.
Between the ages of 2 and 4 the child will require
physical independence and learn the art of socialization with peers.
The beginning equipment uses the child's natural urge to manipulate
objects and explore through the senses. Through sight and touch,
the child will soon memorize sounds of letters and numbers. Certain
pieces are manipulated specifically to develop the fine hand and
finger muscles necessary for buttoning, zipping, cutting with scissors,
and later for tying and writing.
Elementary Classes: From the
ages of 4 through 8, the brain is ready and most receptive to the
abstract concepts of reading and math. The child can now begin to
acquire the basic academic independence necessary for self-education.
This level is made far less forbidding by the
respect the child receives from parents and teachers, and by the
self-confidence acquired during the first stage.
To benefit completely from the Montessori method,
a child should be enrolled for 3 years.
A Montessori education is an investment
in your child's future, at a time when learning and discovering
comes quickly and easily, and to insure the formation of good habits
for later years.
